Coffee and Tea used to be my best friends.

About 7 years ago, I can drink up to 5 cups of coffee when I am at work. This does not include what I consume at home when I wake up in the morning.

About 3 years ago, my coffee addiction met another friend, tea addiction. It all started when I work for my current employer who gives us free-flowing iced tea, orange juice and all kinds of coffee from a Nescafe vendo machine and Milo.  All Free, take home allowed.

Time came that I have to stop all these addiction after I gave birth to my son Gab. Since then, I cannot consume the smallest cup of Starbucks coffee, is that what they call ‘tall’, oh I really don’t know because I don’t like expensive coffee. Of course, you know what’s happening to me, I palpitate and my good old friends will not let me breathe normally.

Just recently, I had another reason to seriously stop taking any caffenated drink. I have an accute laryngitis and my stomach cannot take in anything carbonated because of acid reflux which will make my larynx swollen and it will result to hoarse voice.

With all that, I really need to say goodbye to coffee and iced tea.  I am now giving away all my coffee related items which included two 250g imported coffee given by my Uncle, bunn coffee filters, my coffee maker was already sequestered by my cousin, 3 box of Rabea tea from Saudi.

Any takers?

Who does nto want a microwave? Mmmeeee!

That is true, i don’t want a microwave because I don’t want to pay a lot for my electric bill. But I guess, I’m about to change my mind because of what I found out from Yahoo.

I can’t believe that these can be done on microwaves:

1. Cook fish - Cook a steak in the microwave and you’ll end up with shoe leather. Fish, on the other hand, can be cooked perfectly in the microwave. Simply wrap your fish in microwave-safe plastic with a little seasoning (salt and pepper and some lemon, perhaps) and cook for about 2 minutes on high. (The time for doneness will vary depending on the strength of your microwave and the size and shape of your fillet. Watch it closely to prevent overcooking.)

2. Sanitize your kitchen sponge - Sponges are a breeding ground for germs. It’s easy to just throw them away, but they’re not cheap, so extend the use of your sponge by zapping away harmful bacteria in your microwave daily! Just place your (wet) sponge in the microwave and nuke it for 2 minutes on High. That should be enough to kill 99% of the harmful bacteria that set up camp there.

3. Make potato chips - It’s hard to believe anything can get as crispy as a potato chip in the microwave, but believe it! Thinly sliced potatoes crisp up beautifully in the microwave (see the recipe below) and since these crispy chips aren’t fried, they’re healthier for you, too, with around 8 grams less fat per serving than regular chips. Who knew?

4. Steam vegetables - Put that annoying steamer basket away and cook your veggies in the microwave. Not only is it easier, but it’s better for you. The longer and hotter you cook a food, the more you’ll lose certain heat- and water-sensitive nutrients, especially vitamin C and thiamin - a B vitamin. Because microwave cooking often cooks foods more quickly, it can actually help to minimize nutrient losses.

5. Soften brown sugar - Ever go to make cookies and find your brown sugar is as hard as a rock? Put down your chisel, moisten some paper towels and place them on top of your brick of brown sugar. Microwave in 30-second increments and your brown sugar will loosen up. Crisis averted.

6. Cook bacon - No room for another pan on your stove to cook bacon in for breakfast? No worries. You can get crispy bacon in your microwave. (With less mess!) Cover a microwave-safe dish with a couple of paper towels. Add bacon in a single layer. Cover the bacon with a couple more paper towels and cook in 2-minute increments until crispy.

7. Use it as a proofer – Calling all bakers! Need a warm, moist place for your dough to rise? The microwave is the perfect place to set up a temporary proofer (for nonbakers, a proofer is a contraption that creates ideal conditions, i.e., warm and moist, for yeast breads to rise.) The sealed environment of your microwave will keep the moisture and heat in. Just heat a cup of water in your microwave until it’s steaming, then put your dough in along with it, shut the door and let it do its thing.

Yahoo.com was kind enough to share this recipe on how you make crispy potatoes with the use of your microwave.

Microwave Potato Chips   Active time: 30 minutes | Total: 30 minutes | To make ahead: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

You don’t need a deep fryer to make crispy potato chips. We toss thinly sliced potatoes with just a touch of olive oil, pop them in the microwave and voilà! Crispy, crunchy homemade potato chips with 8 grams less fat per serving than regular chips.

1 1/3 pounds Yukon Gold or red potatoes, unpeeled, scrubbed    2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil    1/2 teaspoon salt

1. Slice potatoes into thin (1/8-inch) rounds. Toss the slices in a medium bowl with oil and salt to coat evenly.    2. Coat a large microwave-proof plate with cooking spray. Arrange some potato slices in a single layer on the plate. Microwave, uncovered, on High until some slices start to brown, 2 to 3 minutes (depending on potato thickness and microwave power). Turn the slices over and continue microwaving until they start to crisp and brown around the edges, 2 to 4 minutes more. Check frequently and rearrange slices as needed to prevent scorching. Transfer the chips to another plate and allow to cool completely. (They will crisp more as they cool.) Repeat with the remaining potato slices.

Makes 4 servings, 12-14 chips each.    Per serving: 141 calories; 2 g fat (0 g sat, 2 g mono); 0 mg cholesterol; 26 g carbohydrate; 3 g protein; 2 g fiber; 291 mg sodium; 807 mg potassium.

Sinner’s Food

Dress down today!

I should be happy getting this text message from my supervisor because I get a chance to wear jeans and snickers at work even on a Monday.  Too bad, I left the house before lunch time and I am already here in the office when the message arrive.  It is Monday and that means tons of emails, hundreds of call, numbers of extra assignments coming from everywhere.  I hate myself for feeling so sleepy as early as the 2nd hour of shift. I can’t help but peek on the web to find something to wake me up.  The chips, fruits and coffee I had were not successful to perk me up.

Only these can perk me up.  These things I call “sinner’s food”.  Since christmas time is just around the corner, I think its the best time I study gift basket arrangements so I can send my friends and family basket gifts with these goodies.  I am sure, not only this christmas would this study in this special lesson in will help me.  I am already starting to count occassions whole year round. I will have  New Baby,  Sympathy, Housewarming, Thank You,  Holidays and All Occasions, Congratulations, Valentine’s Day, New Year’s, Halloween, Graduation, Birthday, Anniversary and Wedding, Mother’s Day,  Father’s Day,  and much more.  Just by going thru these occassion one by one, my business mind is already perked up and I so excited.  Think I should peek online again to see who offer these kinds of courses.

If there is a problem that is not well given attention but being complained about most of the time, I’d say its weight management.   I am hardly not the only one. My feeling of being overweight started since I can’t remember when.  All I remember is I was never the skinny one within my group of friends, in my class and amongst my cousins.

I am in my early 30′s and I have observed my friends younger that I am also think and feel like I used to when I was their age.  Mind you, they are not as fat or obese that you can think of. Would you think that the feeling of being overweight is only within one self.  But for me, it is always best to refer to the Body Mass Index chart.  I hope I had referred to this before.

Refer to this website

If you think suppressing appetite may be helpful to avoid having excess fat is the solution I agree with that.  Thing is, how well will you do it.  I made a quick  research online and I stumble upon this list of five foods that will help you suppress appetite:
*     Drinking water
*     Green veggies such as lettuce, cabbage and other leafy vegetables
*     Pickles
*     Apples
See reference here.

I will really try this myself.  I have tried diet pills, capsules and tea like and coffee appetite suppressants, why not go something natural this time.

I feel like I am loosing weight now….its true…believe it or believe it.  I think the effect of steriods I took at the start of the year if escaping me now.  Too bad its only now it is happening.  I have been bloated all year round because of this medecine, so you really can’t blame me if I have a love and hate feeling with steriod. There is really no best weight loss pills if you are on steriods. I love steriod because I need it for my vocal chord nodule but I hate it because it makes me bloated.

My fruit diet also helped a lot.  I hoard as much fruits as I can whenever I visit SM Department store in Makati on my way to the office.  Thank God for the biggest refrigirator I have ever seen, my office is generous enough to give its employees a two door fridge to stock food good for one week consumption. Mind you, I can eat a whole watermelon and papaya in one day. Makes me full and not bloated at the same time. See these pictures,  the one with my Lola and son was taken on Christmas of 2010.  The one in the middle was during one of the parties we had on Christmas.  One at the bottom is one friday meeting at the office.

You were right, Dea

Who can resist the smell of a lechon manok? I can ignore fried chicken especially if its not very attractive looking but the smell of a lechon manok really bother my taste buds so much. Along our way home we stopped over to one of the most famous branch of Sr Pedro Lechon Manok. We had to open the car windshield during the trip because the smell was really tempting and yet I cannot eat along the way.

i have to borrow a picture of the dish online because i was not able to take a picture of our own when we got home, i literaly attacked the chicken before I am able to change to usual clothes at home.

There is one branch located along Aguinaldo Highway just before you approach SM Bacoor and this is were we got our lechon manok. There was no half size available so we decided to take home a whole for only Php 189.00. I snobbed my favorite “pork sinigang” this time. I know I ate more than what I should have and I hope Dea can offer me best fat burners because she was the one who always promotes Sr Pedro Lechon Manok in the office. And yes Dea, you were right, this is best than what we usually have then.
